Coastal Carolina Surgical Associates Ultrasound Laboratories

Our sonographers perform general diagnostic ultrasounds such as:

  • Abdominal sonograms for evaluation of the pancreas, aorta, liver, kidneys, spleen, gallbladder and bile ducts
  • Renal sonograms for the evaluation of the kidneys and bladder
  • Thyroid and Parathyroid sonograms for the assessment of abnormalities
  • Optional inclusion of a needle biopsy

Ultrasound and Comprehensive Breast Care:

The Coastal Carolina Surgical Associates Ultrasound Laboratory is a vital part of our Comprehensive Breast Care Center. Diagnostic breast ultrasound can be used for the evaluation of a palpable lump, or as a follow-up to an abnormal mammogram finding. These studies are commonly performed on the day of the office visit and results are communicated to the patient at the time they see the physician, usually immediately following the exam. This allows the physician to precede with some treatment options, including ultrasound guided needle biopsies or aspirations which are performed in the office usually on the same day as the appointment. Ultrasound guided breast biopsy is a minimally invasive alternative to an open excisional biopsy.

Thyroid Biopsy Procedure:

A thyroid biopsy procedure is an ultrasound-guided, fine-needle aspiration biopsy of a thyroid nodule or abnormality of the thyroid or soft-tissue neck. It is a quick and minimally invasive procedure performed in-office. We also work in conjunction with local pathology laboratories to provide a cytotechnologist on the day of the procedure to ensure an accurate amount of specimen is taken to prevent a re-biopsy. Results of the biopsy are typically available within 24 – 48 hours of the procedure. In addition, our Ultrasound Laboratories also conduct parathyroid biopsies.

Accreditations:

The Ultrasound Laboratory is accredited in Abdominal/General ultrasound by the American Institute of Ultrasound Medicine (AIUM), Breast ultrasound by the American College of Physicians, and by Endocrine Certification in Neck Ultrasound (ECNU).
